Question: Why is there such an influx of peanut allergies?
(Posted by: christine on 2009-07-03 05:03:39)
The cheapest and healthiest lunch 20 years ago was PB sandwiches. I remember as a kid, we did not have a lot of money and peanut butter sandwiches, milk and a snack are what we got for lunch. Now it seems like almost 1 out of every 5 kids has a peanut allergy. Although I am respectful of these kids who have allergies and I don’t send my son to daycare with anything related to the peanut family- it just seems that this has dramatically increased over the past 10 years. Why is this? Why wasn’t this as big an issue 20 years ago? |

There is SO much debate over that issue! I've heard several theories. One is that we give kids so many vaccines these days that their immune systems are on hair triggers and will attack proteins from foods (peanut, egg, wheat, treenut allergies are all on the rise). On the other hand, some people think it's because kids live in such a "sterilized " world of hand sanitizers, indoor play rounds, and bleach-based floor cleaners that thier immune systems can't handle foreign proteins. I've even heard that genetic engineering of food crops could be to blame, but that's a fringe theory. I think only time will tell. |

No idea, but I didn't have nut allergies until I was about to turn 20.Mine popped up, and they think maybe it's because of hormone changes in the body. Thanks for being a respectful parent that takes care of allegies! People like you are loved by us! :) |
